Three is the magic number…

Posted on: June 8th, 2015 by chandco

Thursday 4 June proved to be quite the night for Harbour & Jones Events as we hosted three extraordinary events spanning across London. Usually this wouldn’t be such big news, but this time around our teams took to the floors of St Paul’s Cathedral, Westminster Abbey and Borough Market for three very different but equally exceptional occasions.

Westminster Abbey took on a Midsummer Night’s Dream theme as the cloisters were transformed with costumed characters, a harpist and magicians to welcome 250 guests. Rhubarb bellinis circled the room along with tempting canapes such as scallop and pancetta lollipops, and smoked aubergine caviar with paprika yoghurt. And as the early evening light faded, our waiters unveiled our trademark pudding walls, filled to the brim with sweet treats including summer berry marshmallows and white chocolate macarons.

Meanwhile, at St Paul’s Cathedral, our teams were busy setting the Cathedral floor for the bi-annual gala dinner. This prestigious banquet pays tribute to 270 distinguished supporters of St Paul’s Cathedral with a spectacular five-course feast. Guests dined on Hereford beef Carpaccio, Pan-seared Scottish cod and a risotto of summer peas before sampling delicate pistachio madeleine’s and finally indulging in vast platters of traditional English cheeses.

Across the city, under the canopy of the historic Borough Market, revellers took to the floor at Event Magazine’s 18th birthday bash. Our signature street food stalls featured authentic Mexican tapas, Korean steamed buns and a ‘best of British’ picnic stall. Partygoers enjoyed craft beers and pomegranate fizz served by waiters dressed in checked shirts, jeans and wellington boots, embracing the festival-feel of the evening.

Our teams were thrilled to have been involved in three very special events in three unique venues – all in one evening.

Borough Market is a delight by night

Posted on: November 24th, 2014 by chandco

On 12 November, as the afternoon light faded and Borough Market’s traders closed down for the evening, our team burst into action, bringing the historic market hall back to life for an evening of vibrant street food and vivacious entertainment.

Over 250 guests caroused in a feast of flavours from our Street Eats food stall concept, launched to critical acclaim earlier this year at St Paul’s Cathedral.

Greeted by barrels of New Forest mulled cider, guests soon warmed up as they gathered around upturned oil cans that were transformed into table top fondue stations.

As the band warmed up and the drinks flowed, it was cheese galore at the bespoke branded raclette stall, with French bread, baby potatoes and pickles, loaded mac ‘n’ cheese and deliciously oozy Montgomery cheddar & sour dough toasties.

Korean yum buns tempted guests over to a tucked away corner. Steamed pillow-soft buns filled were heaped with slow cooked pork belly, miso glazed Portobello mushrooms or sticky chilli ginger salmon and served with kimchi, gyozas & Korean red dragon sauce.

There were winter warmers aplenty at the traditional pie & mash stall, complete with jellied eels, and we bought the Basque to Borough with baby chorizo butter bean stew, squid ink rice with calamari and carved Brindisa Iberico ham, all with a feast of breads, cheese, vinegars and oils.

Under the roof of one of London’s most famous landmarks, passers-by on Borough High Street stopped catch a glimpse of the goings-on inside. The bustling market place was alive with music, laughter and the enticing aromas of the stalls.

Needless to say, the event was a roaring success and feedback was outstanding. One guest commented ‘what a superb evening it was, probably one of the best I’ve been to in recent memory. The food, drink, entertainment and attention to detail were all outstanding, especially the branding’ another said ‘Literally the best corporate event I’ve been to in 20 years’. We couldn’t agree more!

H&J Events and St Paul’s Cathedral launch Street Eats for events and conferences

Posted on: July 23rd, 2014 by chandco

Yesterday (Tuesday 22 July) Harbour & Jones Events teamed-up with St Paul’s Cathedral for an invite only preview of its first ever street food concept for conferences and events – Street Eats. Guests included Tamesis Dual Ltd, E2E Events, Aviation Media, essDocs and Borough Market.

Available for a September 2014 to March 2015, event bookers will have the opportunity to either have their own night market in the Cathedral’s magnificent Crypt or create an alternative daytime conference in the Wren Suite. The concept has already created large amounts of interest with a waiting list for some key dates.

The preview showcased street food stalls including Korean Yum Bun, with steamed buns filled with a choice of sticky ginger and chilli salmon, slow roast Gloucester Old Spot pork belly with spices and kimchi, as well as sliders including home cut beef burgers with stilton and caramelised onion, and burnt mackerel and caviar tartare. Chefs carved Cumbrian air-dried ham from the bone for guests while they tucked into a whole host of English cheeses, chutneys and freshly made breads.

Taking place in the Cathedral’s Wren Suite, bright hues of red, pink and orange washed the bare stone walls, complimented by matching flowers, while a live band entertained guests with upbeat twists on classic funk and pop.

The Beehive room gave guests an early taste of Christmas, with pudding dishes from St Paul’s Christmas menu including – Christmas pudding set cream with burnt sugar and brandy sauce bubbles, apple tart fine with Calvados ice cream and Caramelia chocolate with textures of clementine.

Suppliers included Lavender Green, Event Concept, Ash Productions, Velvet Living and music by Phoebe Gorry Trio.

St Paul’s chosen for television banquet hosted by Prime Minister

Posted on: May 28th, 2014 by chandco

Prime Minister David Cameron will be the host of the final banquet of BBC Television’s popular Great British Menu, broadcast from St Paul’s on Friday 6 June – exactly 70 years after the D-Day landings.

Working behind the scenes to support the banquet is Harbour & Jones Events, who will provide kitchen support and run front of house.

Four of the UK’s best chefs will create their Wartime-inspired menus for 60 guests that will dine in the crypt – the Cathedral’s largest event space. Guests include D-Day veterans Ken Sturdy and George Batts; Churchill’s granddaughter Celia Sandys; one of Churchill’s War Cabinet secretaries, Joy Hunter; and Bletchley Park cypher clerk, Baroness Trumpington.

“D-Day is one of the most important moments in modern history and it’s an honour to be involved in such a fantastic event,” said Rosie Day, Corporate Events Manager, St Paul’s Cathedral.

“St Paul’s Cathedral served as a beacon of hope and Churchill famously said St Paul’s must be saved at all costs, making the Cathedral a truly iconic and historic part of London, and the UK’s, history.”

From Monday 2 June to Sunday 8 June, Harbour & Jones, who also run the café and Restaurant at St Paul’s, will be offering a free mug of tea and traditional British cake in the café to all WW2 veterans from any nation, who fought on foreign fields or the home front.

For the whole of June, the restaurant will also be looking to the past, creating a gastronomic twist on classic 1940’s fare. Diners will be invited to ‘dig for victory’ in their own St Paul’s vegetable garden, try bread and beef dripping and ‘head to the shores’ with cockle popcorn, malt vinegar and seaweed salt. Other classics include homemade bully beef hash, fried duck egg, broccoli and land cress or Clarence Court egg custard with asparagus and St George’s mushroom soldiers, as well as ‘Spam’ hock terrine and Lancashire bomber rarebit. £1 from every set menu will be donated to The Royal British Legion.

The Great British Menu final banquet will be broadcast on BBC2, Friday 6 June at 7pm.

London Awards 2014 – Winners announced

Posted on: January 31st, 2014 by chandco

Last week we helped St Paul’s Cathedral and London First celebrate the people, places and companies that have helped make London such a success over the past year through London First’s London Awards 2014.

Entering through the stunning Cathedral, guests were greeted by the impressive and peaceful Cathedral floor and given their own personal tours, which included areas of the Cathedral that are off limits during the day, before being led down the beautifully lit stairwell to the white arches of Nelson’s chamber.

Hosted by Baroness Jo Valentine, Chief Executive of London First, the five awards were announced using a slightly different format with each award being announced in between courses. The menu featured classic British dishes with a twist, including starter of wild mushroom soufflé with Twineham Grange cream, baby leeks and pink pepper biscuits, herb crusted lamb shoulder and rump, with vanilla parsnips, potato fondant and truffle jus for main course, and a much acclaimed and decadant pudding of white chocolate and Bailey’s torte with pistachio brittle.

“The London Awards are a great way to recognise and celebrate the people and organisations that make London a great place to live, work and play,” said Baroness Jo Valentine.

“The vision and creativity we see from both the winners and those that made the shortlist helps keep the eyes of the world focused on the capital.

“They are a constant reminder of London’s dynamism and why it continues to attract the brightest and the best.”
